Fans attend funeral of Exeter City star Adam Stansfield

More than 1,000 mourners have attended the funeral of an Exeter City footballer who died earlier this month.

Hundreds of people lined the streets of the Devon city to pay their last respects to striker Adam Stansfield.

The former Yeovil and Hereford player was diagnosed with bowel cancer in April and died two weeks ago.

The 31-year-old's coffin was driven through the city ahead of a service at Exeter Cathedral, which was relayed to mourners outside on Cathedral Green.

Stansfield, who was married with three children, was born in Tiverton.

Youth foundation

The funeral cortege left from Exeter's stadium St James Park, where Stansfield had played for four years.

Since his death floral tributes have continued to arrive at the ground.

The funeral route was the same as the open-top bus parade used by Exeter City to mark its promotion to League One in 2009 - said to be among the most special days of Stansfield's life.

His family has set up the Adam Stansfield Foundation for youth football in the South West.

A private family service will be held later.
