Torbay mayor looking for 8% budget cut

Torbay's mayor is looking at making about £9m of cuts in 2011.

The proposed cuts, supported by elected mayor Nick Bye, would equal about 8% of the unitary authority's total annual budget of £115m.

All areas of Torbay Council activity would be affected, including highways, parking enforcement and the bay's library service.

Care services would also be hit. The proposals include a £3m cut in adult social care.

Children's services are facing a £2m reduction in spending.

However, Mr Bye said that £400,000 from council reserves would be available to help improve its child protection work after Ofsted inspectors condemned the service as "inadequate" in October.
