Devon domestic violence refuge to close

A domestic violence refuge centre in Devon is to close after its operator gave notice to Devon County Council to end its contract to provide services.

The council confirmed that Independent Futures, which runs the East Devon Refuge, had given notice.

Independent Futures said its location was not suitable and it was not getting enough referrals to operate.

It added it was working with agencies to ensure such services were still provided in the area.

Bernadette Crawford, general support service manager of Independent Futures, said: "We are working with supporting people, East Devon District Council and ADVA (Against Domestic Violence and Abuse) to find a solution to retain a domestic violence service in the district."

Devon County Council said the decision had been taken "entirely by the provider" and that it was still spending £500,000 to fund women's refuges this year.
