More girls than boys in Devon have joined the scouts for the first time in its 104-year history in the county.

The county had 127 girls and 67 boys join between January 2010 and 2011, the Scout Association said.

It said said there had been an 8% rise in girls joining in the past year in Devon and a 166% increase since 2004.

Girls have been part of the scout movement since 1976. A spokesman said it believed adventurous activities had helped attract girls in recent years.
