A Devon village is to send a traditional red phone box to France.

The box will be presented to the Normandy village of Commes by the residents of Brampford Speke near Exeter.

The K6 model was designed by architect Sir Giles Gilbert Scott, whose grandson Nicholas lives in Brampford Speke.

The original phone box was bought and restored by the village's twinning association, with the aim to give it to Commes.

The two villages have been twinned for more than a decade.

'International icon'

The phone box has been renovated and contains the names of both villages.

The K6 telephone box was designed for George V's Silver Jubilee in 1936.

Mr Scott has written a brief history of the K6 which will accompany the kiosk.

He said: "It became one of the most recognisable items of public design and an international icon.

"It was the telephone box many of us grew up with."

The box is expected to leave Brampford Speke on Wednesday.
