Plans to expand Devon medical schools

More students could be taught at medical schools in Devon if plans to expand them are given the go-ahead.

The University of Exeter and Plymouth University want to separate the Peninsula College of Medicine and Dentistry.

It would mean a medical and dental school at Plymouth and a medical school at Exeter.

The move could result in more places for students, including those from abroad, said the Peninsula College.

A spokesman said the college was unsure how many places would be on offer.

Peninsula College currently has places for 200 medical and 64 dentistry students.

No job losses are expected, a spokesman added.

The proposals need to be approved by the General Medical and Dental Councils, the Higher Education Funding Council for England and the NHS.

A spokesman from the school said he was unsure when the final decision on the move would be made.
