Endangered pied tamarin born at Shaldon Zoo in Devon

Pied tamarins are endangered because of habitat destruction, the zoo said

A rare pied tamarin monkey has been born at a wildlife park in Devon.

It was born at Shaldon Wildlife Trust. The species is classified as endangered by the International Union for Conservation of Nature.

Director Tracey Moore said pied tamarins are "notoriously difficult to breed in captivity".

In the wild they are restricted to the Manaus region of Brazil and are endangered because of habitat destruction.

"They are often quoted as being the rarest primate living in the Amazon", Ms Moore added.
