Possible Devon rubbish tips are named

Rising disposal costs and a shortage of tips have prompted a waste plan by the county council

Ten places across Devon have been named as potential sites to burn or bury rubbish.

Six are being considered for waste recovery, which could include plants where rubbish is burned to create energy, and four could be for landfill.

It is part of a <link> <caption>20-year plan by Devon County Council</caption> <url href="http://www.devon.gov.uk/wastebulletinapril2011final.pdf" platform="highweb"/> </link> , which is facing rising landfill costs and a shortage of tips.

This list goes before the council next Wednesday when it could be put out to public consultation.

The named sites are:

RECOVERY

• Greendale Barton, Woodbury Salterton, East Devon

• Hill Barton, Farringdon, East Devon

• Roundswell, Barnstaple, North Devon

• Tiverton East, Tiverton, Mid Devon

• Heathfield Landfill Site, Kingsteignton, Teignbridge

• Brunel Road Industrial Estate, Newton Abbot, Teignbridge

DISPOSAL

• Broadpath Landfill Site, Uffculme, Mid Devon

• Deep Moor Landfill Site. High Bullen, Torridge

• Heathfield Landfill Site, Kingsteignton, Teignbridge

• Southern Devon - area of search - South Hams/Teignbridge

The council said in a statement: "Devon County Council currently has no proposals for any site, and the waste plan will not prescribe the type of facilities that may be appropriate in each location, so as not to rule out any innovative or sustainable technologies in future."

Subject to any approval by the Development Management Committee on 25 April, formal public consultation is due to start in mid-May for 12 weeks.

The county council is also working with Plymouth City Council and Torbay Council in the <link> <caption>South West Devon Waste Partnership</caption> <url href="http://www.plymouth.gov.uk/swdwp.html" platform="highweb"/> </link> on ways to get rid of its waste.

As a result, MVV Umwelt is planning to build a waste to energy plant at Devonport in Plymouth, although objectors are calling for a judicial review.

Building has also started on another waste to energy plant at Marsh Barton in Exeter, which will process waste from across east Devon.

Waste firm Viridor is asking South Hams District Council for permission to build an energy from waste plant at the New England Quarry at Lee Mill near Ivybridge.
