Torbay velodrome facility 'idea' pursued

Plans for an outdoor velodrome in Devon are being pursued by Torbay Council and British Cycling in a joint venture.

Torbay was identified by the national sporting body as an area which could benefit from the facilities.

Torbay Council said it was "very much at the idea stage" but was "definitely pursuing" it.

British Cycling said it "confirmed its support for plans to develop a multi-discipline cycling centre in Torbay" and would assist with funding.

'Desperate need'

The council said discussions about the facility had taken place, although no plans or drawings had been submitted.

it added that Goodrington "was the main location we're looking into", although other areas would be considered.

British Cycling said it hoped the facility would include a closed road circuit up to 2km in length for competition, coaching and disabled cycling, and a 400m outdoor velodrome for competitions.

Dave Cockram from British Cycling said: "The South West of England is in desperate need of dedicated traffic-free cycling sport facilities.

Economic boost

"At present there are none in Devon or Cornwall and riders are having to travel to Bournemouth or Newport to access a velodrome, or to West London or Birmingham to access a closed road circuit."

Mayor of Torbay, Gordon Oliver, said: "Torbay is setting its sights on becoming an area of cycling excellence.

"Cycling has a wide appeal whatever age or ability, is good for our economy, our environment and the health of our population."

British Cycling said it planned to provide some funding to the venture as part of its 2013-2017 Sport England Whole Sport Plan.
