The rector of a Plymouth church will become the next Anglican Bishop of Crediton, the Diocese of Exeter has announced.

Reverend Nick McKinnel, 58, from the Minster Church of St Andrew will replace the Right Reverend Bob Evens.

Bishop Evens, who has served since 2004, will retire at the end of October.

Mr McKinnel will be consecrated as a bishop in Southwark Cathedral, in London, in November.

He said: "I look forward to getting to know the clergy and congregations in this part of the diocese."

Mr McKinnel has been the rector of the city church since 1994 and is also a prebendary at Exeter Cathedral.
