Devon landlord in drink-drive warning

A pub landlord who was nearly killed by a drunk driver is urging people not to drink and drive this Christmas.

Kevin O'Neill, landlord of the Three Elms in Brixham, Devon, was standing in the doorway of his pub when a car ploughed into it.

CCTV footage of the crash is being shown as part of Devon and Cornwall Police's festive drink-drive campaign.

Mr O'Neill said: "The CCTV will take their breath away and they will think again about drinking and driving."

The driver, Leigh Brennan, 45, from Brixham, lost control of his Volvo in March as he drove through the town at 60mph.

'Miracle no-one killed'

Mr O'Neill suffered a crushed pelvis, broken ribs and spinal injuries after being buried under masonry.

In July Brennan was jailed for a year and banned from driving for two years.

Insp Richard Pryce said: "The devastation caused by drink-driving can be seen clearly in the CCTV footage.

"There was a group of people stood outside the pub just moments before the crash and it is a miracle that no-one was killed and only one person was injured.

"The number of people who are killed or seriously injured by a driver who is under the influence of alcohol or drugs is much too high and can be reduced."
