Heavy snow and blizzard conditions have caused traffic chaos in parts of Devon with icy conditions set to continue.

There are hazardous driving conditions because of the snow on the M5 between J30 at Exeter and J26 at Wellington.

The outside lane of the motorway has become unusable between the two junctions.

At midday, the Met Office issued a yellow ice warning for the South West. Further sleet showers are expected throughout Friday.

More than 260 volunteer snow wardens have been on standby to help their local communities as part of Devon County Council's "snow plan".

Earlier several roads in Devon saw traffic at a standstill including the A38 trunk road at Haldon Hill and Telegraph Hill on the A380.

Dave Kirk, an HGV driver, who was stuck on the A361 for several hours, said: "It's absolutely horrendous. I have been here for three hours and nothing is moving.

"It's snow, snow and more snow. There's not a lot we can do. We have just got to sit here and let them grit the road and get the snow ploughs out."

Supt Phil Kennedy, from Devon and Cornwall Police, said: "My advice would be not to make any unnecessary journeys.

"If you have to drive you must do so with extreme care."

In Cornwall snow was reported in the morning on Bodmin Moor and in Liskeard, in the south east of the county.

Driving conditions have been tricky around the Kit Hill area of Callington.

There are reports of flooding on the roads in west Cornwall.

A Flood Alert has been issued by the Environment Agency for the West Cornwall Rivers.

Flooding is possible for Lands End, Helston, Crowlas, St Ives, Hayle, Camborne and Perranporth throughout the day on Friday.

First Great Western reported a blocked line between St Erth and St Ives due to flooding.

Three cars became stuck in flood water earlier on Coach Road near St Ives.
