Swept-away woman dies after rescue near Baggy Point

A woman who was found by rescuers after being swept out to sea in north Devon has died, police say.

The woman was believed to have been swimming or surfing when she was reported as swept away near Baggy Point, Croyde at about 11:20 GMT.

She was later found on the shore and taken to North Devon District Hospital, where she later died.

The woman was thought to have been on holiday with family, Devon and Cornwall Police said.

After the alarm was raised, two lifeboats from nearby Appledore and a rescue helicopter from RMB Chivenor were dispatched to look for her.

She was recovered from the shore at about 13:00.

Her next-of-kin have been informed and a file was being prepared for the coroner, police said.
