Tributes left at Teignmouth for the missing fishermen

A fisherman who died when a boat carrying two men went missing has been formally identified by police.

Shane Hooper, 33, was onboard the scalloper JMT which was reported missing on 9 July.

His body was recovered last Friday and the search for the second member was called off.

The wreck of the 11m (36ft) vessel was found 53m (174ft) under the water, five miles north of Plymouth's Eddystone Lighthouse, on Sunday.

A Devon and Cornwall Police dive team searched the wreckage on Thursday. Det Insp Ian Reid said: "The divers were able to use the remotely operated underwater vehicles to thoroughly search the vessel and there was absolutely no evidence of a body inside or nearby.

"Because of this, the depth of the wreckage and the dangerous conditions, we did not send any of the dive team down manually.

"The families have been told about all our findings and we have been in contact with them throughout this investigation."

Tributes have been left to Mr Hooper and the second unnamed crewman at Teignmouth on the south Devon coast.

The matter has been referred to the Marine Accident Investigation Branch to investigate.
