Firefighters have tackled a corn crop and combine harvester fire in Devon.

Firefighters from Devon and Somerset Fire and Rescue Service were sent to the blaze in the Brixton area at lunchtime on Friday.

At its peak, 19 fire engines were at the scene at Stamps Hill, Brixton as flames spread across five fields.

Farmer Steven Cane, whose machine burst into flames, said about five other combine harvesters in the area had gone up in flames during the heatwave.

"The combine cut out and I got off and the flames were shooting out of the back of the combine," he said.

"The warm wind escalated the situation and it tracked across the road and into my neighbour's farm and we had to get fire crews in to protect their livestock."

The fire service urged local residents and businesses to close their windows and doors due to the "large smoke plume, external" which could be seen across Plymouth.

A spokesperson for the fire service said they believed no one had been injured and no properties had been damaged.
