Emergency services attended Langage Business Park in Plympton

Buildings were evacuated and roads were closed after a gas leak in Devon was caused by "reversing machinery" hitting a pipe, the fire service said.

Devon and Somerset Fire and Rescue service attended Langage Business Park in Plympton, near Plymouth, at about 09:50 BST.

Members of the public were evacuated from surrounding non-residential buildings as a precaution, Devon and Cornwall Police confirmed.

People were advised to avoid the area.

The leak has been isolated and a 350m (1,148ft) cordon is expected to be removed shortly, the force added.

Richard Marks, Wales & West Utilities Gas Emergency Service Manager for Plymouth, said "third party damage" had caused the leak and repairs were being carried out.

He added: "We expect people will be allowed back into their properties this afternoon."
