Archbishop of Canterbury leads Devon remembrance service

The Archbishop of Canterbury will also lead prayers at the Remembrance service on Plymouth Hoe on Sunday

The Archbishop of Canterbury is in Devon, where he led a church service in Torquay to mark Armistice Day.

The Most Rev Justin Welby led the service at the Chapel of the Innocents at St Mary the Virgin Church in the town.

On Sunday, he will lead prayers at the annual Remembrance Sunday parade on Plymouth Hoe.

The archbishop's visit to the county is one of a series of church mission weekends across England.

During his visit to Torquay, he took part in an Act of Remembrance led by the Royal British Legion at Torquay War Memorial, alongside civic leaders.

This included the 11:00 silence, marking the hour the guns fell silent at the end of World War One.

The archbishop then led a Walk of Reflection for Peace, pausing at Torquay Harbour Bridge to pray for peace makers and "bridge builders" in places of conflict, and at the harbour wall to pray for peace "beyond the horizon of the here and now".

The archbishop said: "My sense of gratitude for what was done for us means that what I'm doing later today and what I'm doing tomorrow... it's such a privilege to be allowed to take part in that."
