A pet food bank in Plymouth is appealing for more donations to be able to keep running.

Bramble's pet food bank provides emergency food parcels to help owners struggling to afford to feed their pets.

Jo Butler set up the non-profit in 2020 but fears it may have to close if demand keeps exceeding supply.

She described the situation as "heart-breaking".

Ms Butler said she started the pet food bank after seeing a growing need for pet food assistance in the community.

'Desperately need help'

The number of people requesting help has doubled since Bramble's was founded almost four years ago, she said.

"We have seen a significant increase in the demand for our services in recent months," Ms Butler said.

"We probably get about 40 to 60 requests a month now for people needing help.

"We simply don't have enough food on our shelves to support people that so desperately need our help and who are struggling to feed their pets."

The community initiative relies on donations from individuals and businesses to provide food for a variety of domesticated animals including cats, dogs, rabbits and hamsters.

Bramble's is currently asking for donations of dry and wet dog and cat food, as well as treats and toys in the lead up to Christmas.
