The crash took place on St Simon's Lane, near the junction with Salisbury Road.

Floral tributes have been laid at the scene near a damaged stone wall bordering the grounds of Mount Gould Hospital.

Assistant Chief Constable Nikki Leaper said the force had referred itself to the Independent Office of Police Conduct (IOPC).

"Our thoughts remain with everyone that has been affected by this incident," she said.

"The matter is now subject to an independent investigation by the IOPC therefore it would be inappropriate to comment further.
