Fire in Tavistock garage caused by e-bike being charged

A garage has been damaged by fire after an electric bike was left on charge, emergency services have said.

Devon and Somerset Fire and Rescue attended the scene in Tavistock, Devon, on Saturday morning at about 05:00 GMT.

Three fire engines tackled the blaze that is believed to have started after an e-bike was left charging.

Tavistock Fire Station said rechargeable items "can catch fire with little or no warning with catastrophic results".

A spokesperson said: "Please consider where you recharge your batteries, if this is in your house make sure you can get out if the worse should happen.

"Do not charge things in passageways or near your escape route and ensure they are turned off as soon as they are charged."

Firefighters confirmed the garage was 70% damaged by smoke and 40% damaged by fire.
