Police said the jam was caused by faulty traffic lights on Lockyers Quay

Motorists described people "shouting for help" from a multi-storey car park in Plymouth after they were left stuck for three hours in snarled-up traffic.

Police said tailbacks were caused by a "defective traffic light" on Lockyers Quay.

Jane Greaves was among those on the tenth floor in the Harbour Car Park.

Leaving the National Marine Aquarium at 15:15 GMT, she said she was still in the car park three hours later.

She added: "Folk are shouting help, police arrived, looked up, and drove away."

Insp Alex Danning of Devon and Cornwall Police said engineers were on their way to fix the issue.

He added: "We are asking motorists to avoid the area and that particular multi-storey where people are unfortunately stuck and really struggling to get out."
