Work to remove the canopy at Exeter's former bus station is under way, the city council has confirmed.

Demolition works will see the post-war buildings demolished by local contractor Wring Group.

Asbestos is due to be removed from the site in Bampfylde Street over the next few months, Exeter City Council , external(ECC) said.

Council Leader Phil Bialyk has said he will be "glad to see the full removal" of the former bus station.

"I'm glad that work is now well under way to demolish the former Exeter Bus Station, and everybody will be able to see the progress that is being made," he said.

"Clearing this site will remove an eyesore and also paves the way for significant future redevelopment at the site."

The former station was replaced by a brand new glass-fronted facility in July 2021.

Temporary uses for the site are being considered once demolition is complete.

The area is expected to be redeveloped with new buildings and uses in the longer term, ECC said.
