Purbeck district electoral wards redrawn

District ward boundaries in part of Dorset are to be redrawn to accommodate three new councillors.

The Local Government Boundary Commission for England (LGBCE) proposed that Purbeck District Council should have 27 councillors, not 24.

Residents are being invited to comment on where the new ward boundaries should be drawn.

The commission said some wards had become much larger than others and it was trying to correct the situation.

Chairman Max Caller said: "The purpose of our review is to try to ensure that each councillor represents around the same number of people so that every elector's vote is worth the same at local election time. That's not the case at the moment for Purbeck.

"St Martin ward, for example, has 28% fewer electors per councillor than the average in Purbeck."

Residents have until 14 November to submit their views and draft recommendations for the new wards will be published in February 2012.

The LGBCE is conducting electoral reviews of 19 county councils, boroughs and districts across the country.
