Bournemouth birth boom causes school places shortage

A Dorset town faces a shortage of primary school places caused by a "dramatic increase" in births since 2005.

Bournemouth Borough Council forecasts a shortfall of 420 places by 2014 as demand for reception places is expected to increase to 2,070.

Several schools have already been expanded and a board has been set up to try to tackle the shortage.

Expansion plans are being put in place at fifteen more schools in the town.

Heathlands Primary School and Queen's Park Infant School have both had their capacity increased.

Projects are also under way to expand King's Park Primary School and St Michael's CE Primary School, with temporary measures at a further 13 schools to increase capacity by about 30 pupils each.
