London 2012: Weymouth and Portland sailing village wins award

The 77 residential units at Osprey Quay will be available for social and affordable housing after the Games

The Weymouth and Portland Olympic Sailing Village in Dorset has won the 2012 UK Housing Design Awards.

Osprey Quay on Portland has been transformed into a village of 77 houses for the 400 athletes and team officials taking part in the sailing events.

The development will be made available for social and affordable housing after the games.

At an awards ceremony at the British Museum earlier, the project was named the supreme winner.

The awards, which are in their 64th year, are a partnership between government and key industry bodies.

Ten other projects also picked up awards.

The Olympic and Paralympic sailing events will take place in Weymouth Bay and Portland Harbour in July and August.

The entire Osprey Quay development is being rented by Locog for the Olympics and Paralympics and the houses overlook Chesil beach.

Competitors will be able to watch the races from terraces outside their bedrooms when not in a race.

The Weymouth and Portland National Sailing Academy and the adjoining commercial marina will host a total of 13 sailing events during London 2012.
