Dorset's Diamond Jubilee jigsaw world record attempt

A Dorset craftsman will attempt to set a new world record by creating the largest hand-cut, wooden jigsaw puzzle.

Dave Evans, of Guest Book Puzzles, Weymouth said the jigsaw would be made up of 40,000 pieces and reach 150 sq ft (13.9 sq m).

It will feature a union jack and a montage of photographs of the Queen's Diamond Jubilee celebrations in Dorset.

Mr Evans said he planned to present the puzzle, which he will cut in February next year, to the Queen.

'My legacy'

He will also attempt to beat the record for the largest commercially made jigsaw which currently stands at 32,256 cardboard pieces and has been held by German jigsaw company Ravensburger AG since 2010.

It will take Mr Evans, who said he had always been a "lover of puzzles", two weeks to cut the jigsaw at his workshop at Brewer's Quay in Weymouth.

"If I achieve my aim, this puzzle will be my legacy," he said.

Mr Evans served an apprenticeship with Victory Puzzles in Bournemouth more than 40 years ago before becoming a professional boxer. He returned to puzzle-making 14 years ago.

The two record attempts will be adjudicated by an observer on behalf of Guinness World Records.
