Hengistbury Head and River Stour heathland protection funding

An award of £100,000 is going towards the protection of Bournemouth's heathland habitats.

The boardwalk on the cliff top dunes at Hengistbury Head is to be extended by 300m (984ft) to prevent its yearly one million visitors damaging the land.

Work will also be carried out in the woodland and riverbanks along the Stour at Muscliff.

Mark Anderson, Bournemouth Council's green champion, said it would benefit the natterjack toad and sand lizard.

The rare species have habitats in the area.

"These projects will reduce pressure on the adjacent heathland by improving access on these popular sites," Mr Anderson said.
