Two Dorset coastal paths shut amid safety fears

Two coastal footpaths in Dorset have been closed for safety reasons following cliff falls.

The Castle Cove beach access path is out of bounds after cracks opened up across the surface of a cliff next to steps leading to the shore.

A cliff fall has also led to the closure of a footpath at Bincleaves.

Dorset County Council said the coast path in the Castle Cove and Bincleaves area, diverted inland due to landslips several years ago, was unaffected.

A spokesman said the areas will be monitored.

The council has said recent heavy rainfall and snow caused problems, with significant landfalls to the north of Ocean Bay, particularly between Burlington Chine and Sheps Hollow.

Charlotte Blackman, 22, from Heanor, Derbyshire, died on 24 July after the 160ft (49m) high cliff collapsed onto Hive Beach near Burton Bradstock.

Five people escaped unhurt after a landslide on 8 August between Charmouth and Golden Cap.
