Man saved in Dorset after ignoring mud warning

An elderly man who became stuck in mud was "very fortunate" after two off-duty coastguards managed to rescue him.

The man, aged in his 80s, had ignored warning tape and tried to walk past a landslip in Swanage, Dorset, when he became trapped.

The two coastguards happened to be in the area on Saturday afternoon and helped him to safety.

A coastguard spokeswoman said the man had been "very embarrassed" by his ordeal.

Last weekend, four people got stuck in three separate incidents.

It comes after heavy rainfall led to a number of landslips along the county's coastline.

The spokeswoman said: "The man walked into an area that was taped off and was very fortunate a couple of off-duty coastguards were in the area.

"The tapes are there as warnings to people that there is a danger, but they do get ignored."
