A large rock fall on the Jurassic Coast in Dorset has sparked renewed warnings about walking on cliffs and beaches.

The fall, at West Cliff, Portland, is thought to have happened on Wednesday.

Sam Rose, of the Jurassic Coast World Heritage Site said: "Stay away from the base and the top of cliffs because you just can't predict what will happen."

Part of the coast path at the top of the cliff has been diverted inland for over a year following concerns surrounding the eroding cliff.

Dorset County Council has also reminded members of the public to take notice of the warning signs.

Peter Finney, Dorset County Council's Cabinet member for environment, said: "The Jurassic coast is an eroding coastline which brings its own hazards.

"Our advice as always is to take care, take notice of warning signs and stay away from the cliffs."

The authority said its rangers regularly checked the state of the coast path and ensure signage is in place, warning of any hazards.
