A businessman who was fatally shot at his luxury home waited nearly 50 minutes for an ambulance to arrive because he was not initially considered a top priority patient, it has emerged.

Guy Hedger was killed at his home in Ashley, Dorset, on 30 April.

The emergency call was made at about 03:05 BST and the ambulance arrived at 03:51, the Bournemouth Echo reports.

The ambulance service said he was not classed as a category one patient as he was conscious and breathing.

There are four levels of ambulance response for South Western Ambulance Service calls: Category one - immediately life threatening event, category two - serious potentially life threatening conditions, category three - urgent condition needs treatment to relieve suffering and category four - non-emergency but medical need for ambulance.

Three men appeared at Winchester Crown Court on Tuesday charged with the 61-year-old's murder.

Kevin Downton, 40, of Winterborne Stickland, near Blandford, Jason Baccus, 41, and Scott Keeping, 44, both of Verney Close, Bournemouth, are due to to enter pleas on 26 July.

A 45-year-old man from Poole was arrested on suspicion of conspiracy to commit aggravated burglary on Thursday and is helping police with their inquiries.

A 40-year-old woman previously arrested in relation to the incident has been released under investigation.

Mr Hedger was shot when at least two intruders entered his home and died after being taken to hospital.

A post-mortem examination concluded he died as a result of gunshot wounds, police have said.
