A search has been carried out for a man in his 20s who vanished while swimming off the Dorset coast.

The Coastguard said his brother reported he "had gone under the water and disappeared" near Durdle Door, at about 17:45 BST on Sunday.

Police and coastguard teams resumed the search on Monday after it was suspended at nightfall on Sunday.

Crowds have flocked to the beauty spot, near Lulworth, in recent weeks since lockdown restrictions were eased.

Dorset Police said the man, from London, had been swimming with two other people when he got into difficulty and did not return to the shore.

HM Coastguard said shoreline searches have been completed on Monday at Man O'War Beach, Saint Oswald's Bay and Durdle Beach and a search has also taken place at Dungy Head.

On Sunday, in addition to two coastguard helicopters, lifeboats from Weymouth and Swanage were involved along with Weymouth, Kimmeridge and Wyke Coastguard rescue teams.

The search was "suspended at nightfall after a very intensive and thorough" operation.

Last month, three people suffered serious injuries at Durdle Door after leaping from the landmark limestone arch.

Thousands of people were evacuated from the beach and surrounding cliff area to allow air ambulances to land.
