Work has started on a new lifeguard training facility on the Dorset coast.

Bournemouth Lifeguard Corps (BLC) will lease the purpose-built centre beneath West Cliff Zig-Zag as its new headquarters.

The building, funded by the government's Levelling Up Fund, will have dedicated training and operational rooms, equipment storage and changing facilities.

Work begun this week and is expected to finish in March 2025.

BLC has been active in the area since 1965, with more than 100 members working with the RNLI to provide support during peak season and high footfall events on the coast.

Committee member John Humphreys said the new facility wold be "world-class" and "support us in our day-to-day operations, which are ultimately focused around protecting and saving lives".

Demolition work on the existing structure started this week

Situated on the Joseph Steps site beneath West Cliff Zig-Zag, the new building will sport a modern, sustainable design with a natural wood-effect frontage overlooking the sea.

It will be constructed on the foundations of an existing derelict structure, demolition of which started this week.

Councillor Millie Earl, member for connected communities at Bournemouth, Christchurch and Poole Council, said she was "delighted" with the plans.

West Cliff Zig-Zag will remain open throughout the work and beach access will not be affected, the council said.
