Dorset flood warnings as heavy rain forecast

Flood warnings are in place across Dorset following heavy rainfall on Monday.

The Environment Agency (EA) has issued warnings for Lower Frome from Dorchester to East Stoke as well as for Middle Stour from Hammoon to Sturminster Marshall.

Further rainfall is forecast for the next 12 hours, while and river levels are high and likely to rise further.

The EA urged people to "remain safe and be aware of your surroundings".

A number of roads were closed across the county on Monday.

Bridport Football Club was hit by the flooding, with Chairman Adrian Scadding calling the situation "horrendous".

Mr Scadding spent Monday at the club's ground with volunteers, trying to clear water from the inside the clubhouse.

He said: "There was six or seven inches of water inside the clubhouse and two foot of water on the pitch. It's a nightmare.

"We've managed to clear the clubhouse now but we know more rain is expected this week so we're a bit worried about that."

He admitted the pitch is currently unusable but added: "The manager thinks the team will still be able to play on Saturday."

The EA said: "Avoid using low lying footpaths and any bridges near local watercourses and do not attempt to walk or drive through flood water."

A flood warning means the EA considers flooding of homes and businesses is likely and action should be taken.

Under a flood warning, external, people are also advised to move their family, pets, valuables and vehicles to safety.
