Work has begun to demolish a former council office building that been derelict since 2016.

The North Quay site in Weymouth, Dorset, is owned by Dorset Council and had cost the authority about £110,000 a year to maintain.

The council has previously said the site would be used as a car park while it is marketed for development.

Work will pause at Christmas and is expected to take five or six weeks to complete in the New Year.

The council said there would be no road closures for the work and was on target to completed within its time schedule.

A Dorset Council spokesperson said: "We'll make every effort to keep disruption to a minimum, thank you to everyone for their patience while this work is ongoing.

"There will be no wrecking ball, the exterior will be demolished methodically, floor by floor, and pushed inwards by mechanical grabbers to keep dust and rubble to a minimum.

"The material removed will be crushed on site before being used as hardcore on the same site or used by our highways team for local road repairs."
