Organisers said "with great sadness" this summer's bank holiday carnival will not take place

A town carnival in east Dorset has been called off due to a lack of volunteers offering to help organise and run it.

The organisers of Verwood Carnival said they had been forced to cancel the event with "great sadness".

Posting on the carnival's Facebook page, they said an urgent meeting held to call for volunteers had seen only four people turn up.

If enough volunteers failed to come forward by June, organisers added next year's event would also be at risk.

The carnival, held in Verwood on the second bank holiday in May, normally features a procession through the town and a fair.
