A student and member of Dorset Youth Parliament is on a mission to make school uniforms more affordable.

Stanley, who studies in Bridport, is calling for schools to ease the financial pressure on families during the cost of living crisis.

He said they could use cheaper brands and set up places for old uniforms swaps.

Councillor Byron Quayle said it was good to see "young voices" being heard in the community.

Dorset Youth Parliament gives a space for 11 to 18-year-olds to talk about issues that affect students and brainstorm solutions.

Stanley has been campaigning on the accessibility and affordability of school uniform for two years.

'Positive changes'

"I think schools could use cheaper brands for uniforms and set up places where students can swap their old uniforms," he said.

"I'd also like students to have more personal autonomy with their uniform and use it to express themselves.

"My school has made some really positive changes to its uniform policy and my fellow students now have more freedom in what they wear."

He is also calling for uniforms to be more practical for students to wear outside of school, including removable school logos.

Stanley has also suggested a uniform rating system that scores uniforms on comfort, practicality and cost to be implemented.

He said he has received a positive response from other youth parliament members and the schools in Dorset he has contacted.

Mr Quayle, portfolio holder for children, education and early help at Dorset Council, said the Youth Parliament provided "a brilliant opportunity" for young people.

"It's good to see young voices like Stanley being heard in the community," he added.
