Braintree murders: Suspect regains consciousness

A man being held under armed guard in hospital after a shooting in Essex in which a mother and daughter died has now regained consciousness.

Christine Chambers, 38, and daughter Shania, two, were found dead at their home in Braintree on 6 June.

The 50-year-old man had been taken to hospital with gunshot wounds. An Essex Police spokesman said he was aware he was under arrest.

Ms Chambers had told police she was being harassed weeks before her death.

The Independent Police Complaints Commission (IPCC) is investigating the handling of Ms Chambers' complaints.

The watchdog is looking into the run-up to the incident in Bartram Avenue.

The IPCC said its initial investigations had found Ms Chambers contacted officers on 27 May in the latest of two years of contact with Essex Police.

Post-mortem examinations showed she had been shot in the abdomen.

The provisional cause of death given for her two-year-old daughter was a single bullet wound.

Ms Chambers' 10-year-old daughter escaped from the house and alerted family members who called police.
