Essex flood advice after spate of calls

Fire crews in Essex alerted to water-logged gardens have warned they only deal with flooding which puts lives at risk or enters homes.

More than 50 flood-related calls had been made to Essex Fire and Rescue Service by Sunday afternoon, it said.

Crews helped 20 homes affected by 3ft-deep rainwater in Chafford Hundred.

"In many cases, calls have been to incidents where the service is unable to attend as there is no risk to life," a spokesman said.

"Crews are not able to do anything to help, for example, flooding in people's gardens."

Fire crews were sent to Harlow, Waltham Abbey, Roydon, Brentwood, Ongar and Grays.

Anglian Water pumped out flood water and fire crews helped move residents' furniture and possessions to a dry place in Catalina Avenue, Chafford Hundred.

The fire service added that it does not stock sandbags and urged people to bear their advice in mind before making an emergency call.
