PC Ian Dibell funeral in Weeley features guard of honour

It is thought PC Dibell had tried to intervene in a dispute when he was shot

A police guard of honour was formed at the funeral of murdered off-duty officer PC Ian Dibell.

The 41-year-old policeman was shot dead in Clacton-on-Sea, Essex, on 9 July.

His suspected killer, Peter Reeve, 64, of Fairlop Close in Clacton, was found dead in a churchyard in Writtle, Chelmsford, the following day.

The private funeral for family, close friends and colleagues took place at Weeley Crematorium, near Clacton, on Tuesday afternoon.

The funeral started with a 24-officer guard of honour lining the way as six pall-bearers carried the coffin which was draped in a police flag.

PC Dibell's helmet was placed on top of the coffin.

Essex Police is working with the family of PC Dibell to hold a memorial service at St James' Church in Clacton on 15 August.

Inquests into the deaths of both PC Dibell and Mr Reeve have been opened and adjourned.

It is thought PC Dibell was shot after intervening in a row in Redbridge Road, Clacton, in which a man was also wounded.

The police investigation into the killing of PC Dibel - described as a "hero" by his family - is continuing.
