Train services in Essex have been delayed as snow fell in parts of the county throughout the day.

Light snow showers hit north Essex, with the Colchester and Chelmsford areas among those affected.

Greater Anglia trains between Norfolk and London were subject to delays and cancellation.

Widespread snow was expected with the Met Office warning of "bitterly cold" temperatures. Essex Police said there had been no weather-related incidents.

The force called on motorists to ensure their vehicles were ready for poor driving conditions and consider taking a blanket and shovel for long journeys.

Ch Insp Justin Smith said people should allow extra time for journeys.

"Remember that the roads can be very icy and you need to drive cautiously, reducing your speed and allowing extra time to brake," he said.

Schools were largely unaffected across Essex, but several closed at lunchtime on Friday.
