Chelmsford prison inmate in hospital after cell fire

Chelmsford prison staff managed to put the fire out, the Ministry of Justice said
An inmate from Chelmsford prison has been taken to hospital after starting a fire in a cell.
Nine other people were treated at the scene after the fire took hold in the Springfield Road prison at 12:30 BST.
The prisoner, who is in his 20s, was taken to Broomfield Hospital. His condition is not believed to be life-threatening, the ambulance service said.
Essex Police are investigating the incident.
The ambulance service said it sent an ambulance, three rapid response vehicles and a hazardous area response team.
Staff at the prison managed to put the fire out and the fire service attended as a matter of course, the Ministry of Justice said.
Chelmsford prison accepts male prisoners and young offenders from the local area and is a Category B jail for inmates who do not require maximum security, but for whom escape still needs to be very difficult.
