A 55-year-old man has died after becoming unwell in police custody.

Essex Police said he was arrested in Grays on Sunday on suspicion of drugs offences and taken to the town's police station.

At about 21:00 GMT, he became ill and was taken to Basildon Hospital where he was pronounced dead.

The case has been referred to the Independent Police Complaints Commission (IPCC).

The IPCC said its investigators were sent to the police station on Sunday to obtain early accounts from the officers involved but it was not releasing any further details at this stage.
