Essex Police has arrested a 28-year-old man in Hertfordshire on suspicion of aggravated burglary.
The force said up to five people armed with weapons went into the launderette.
It is believed the others fled the scene after the man was fatally injured. A post-mortem examination will be carried out later.
Officers previously said they were looking into the possibility the 39-year-old man questioned by detectives had acted in self-defence.
Witnesses are urged to come forward.
