A 17-year-old boy has been charged in connection with a neo-Nazi-inspired terror plot involving printed firearms.

The teenager was arrested last week after police searched homes in Chelmsford and Brentwood in Essex.

The boy, who is from Essex but cannot be named because of his age, is facing six terrorism charges.

He appeared before Westminster Magistrates' Court via video link and was remanded in custody to appear at the Old Bailey on 22 January.

It is alleged that he sought access to plastic guns to be made by a 3D printer.

The boy is accused of preparing for a terrorist attack by drawing up plans for a storage bunker, providing information for the manufacture of firearms by a 3D printer, and transferring money to another person for materials to manufacture them.

It is alleged that his intended target was another person.

The boy has been charged with preparing acts of terrorism, disseminating a terrorist publication and four counts of possessing material likely to be useful to a person committing or preparing an act of terrorism.

The police said it was a "pre-planned, intelligence-led operation" led Counter Terrorism Policing North East and supported by the Eastern Region Special Operations Unit (ERSOU) and Essex Police.
