The vehicle was carrying tens of thousands of litres of vegetable oil when it overturned on the M11
A lorry carrying 30,000 litres (6,600 gallons) of vegetable oil crashed and overturned into a central reservation, a fire service said.
Essex Fire and Rescue Service attended the M11 northbound carriageway crash on Wednesday at about 15:20 BST.
It happened between junctions eight and nine, for Bishop's Stortford and London Stansted Airport.
The road was reopened at about 06:00 BST following resurfacing works overnight.
Essex Fire and Rescue Service attended the scene and said a small fire was already out when crews arrived
The driver did not suffer injuries believed to be life-threatening or life-changing, police said. No other vehicles were involved.
Oil spilled on to the road and there were long delays throughout Wednesday evening.
A video shared on social media showed flames coming from the tanker. The fire service said a small fire was already out upon its arrival.
