A homeowner and their pets have been made homeless by a fire that ravaged their bungalow.

The roof of the semi-detached property in Shelley Avenue, Basildon, caught fire while work was being carried out on it at 09:10 BST.

Two people were treated for smoke inhalation and burns at the scene.

The fire was extinguished by 10:40 and no other properties were affected, the fire service said.

Monitoring officer for the incident, Toby Ingham said: "Crews did really well to contain the fire and stop it from reaching the nearby properties.

"Unfortunately, the homeowner and pets have temporarily become homeless as a consequence.

"The performance of the crews was excellent, and the incident was very well coordinated by the incident commander, watch manager Andy Barber from Basildon Fire Station."
