A woman has died after a car hit the central reservation on the M25 motorway, police said.
A passenger was injured in the incident, which took place on Saturday at 20:40 GMT on the clockwise route near Brentwood in Essex.
Essex Police said the woman who died was from London, and her family has been informed.
The road was closed clockwise between junctions 27 and 28 and motorists reported six-hour traffic queues.
The passenger, a woman in her 20s, sustained minor injuries and was taken to hospital.
Essex Police has appealed to motorists for CCTV, dash cam or any other footage of the incident.
The road reopened at around 04:30 GMT.
BBC Essex journalist Nick Alliker said he was trapped in queues for nearly seven hours.
He had been travelling back from Southend's football match against Kidderminster when two police cars "came roaring past", he said.
"We were about seven cars from the front, so we couldn't turn around as other cars further back did.
"People got out of their cars. Some fell asleep. Eventually one lane was opened at about 02:45."
