A woman escaped from a window after her house caught fire due to an overheating charger.

Refuse collectors called Essex County Fire & Rescue Service to Grange Road, Dovercourt, after they heard a smoke alarm sounding inside the property.

Crews found a "well-developed" fire in the living room when they arrived at about 06:45 GMT on Tuesday.

They said the smoke alarm may have saved the life of the woman, who fled through a ground-floor window.

She was left in the care of paramedics, the fire service said.
