Police have closed London Road in Stanway, at the junction with Lucy Lane South

A man was taken to hospital with what were described as serious injuries after a road crash.

Essex Police officers closed London Road, Stanway, as emergency workers responded to the incident at 12:00 GMT.

Motorists were advised to avoid the area, with the road closure in place at the Lucy Lane South junction.

A seriously injured man was taken to Addenbrookes Hospital while a second patient went to Colchester Hospital, the ambulance service said.

Police said they expected to remain at the scene until Monday evening and warned the closure could impact rush-hour traffic.

Eyewitnesses have been encouraged to contact the force with any information while officers investigated.

"We would also like to appeal for a man who may have witnessed the incident and who then helped in the minutes immediately after to come forward and speak to us," a police spokesperson said.

London Road connects traffic from Colchester to the Tollgate Centre Shopping Park and on to Stane Retail Park.
